Securing funding is a critical part of life for leaders in charities and voluntary organisations. Crafting a winning grant application requires strategy, precision, and a clear understanding of funders’ expectations. Here are some key tips to improve your chances of success.

Research thoroughly

Before applying, take time to check the funder’s priorities, values, and eligibility criteria. Tailor your application so your project fits into their goals. We will be offering funding to cover six themes. Our remit is broad. If you are a voluntary organisation in England, Scotland or Wales and you have projects that cover health and wellbeing, you should be eligible.

Clearly define your work

A successful grant application explains what you do in simple terms. Outline your objectives, target audience, timeline, and measurable outcomes. All funders want to know precisely how their money will be used and the impact it will create. Explain how the grant will create tangible, meaningful change.

Understand your budget

Be transparent and detailed when talking about money and how you’ll spend it. Ensure any financial information reflects all costs; while showing you’ve considered cost-effectiveness. Many funders love organisations that can demonstrate they are financially savvy and understand value for money.

Get to know funders

Build relationships with potential funders before you submit your application. Sign up for newsletters and connect on social media. Introduce yourself at events and attend any webinars, or workshops, don’t hesitate to ask questions. A strong relationship can make your application stand out.

Use plain English and avoid sector-based jargon

Write your application in clear, concise, and engaging language. Avoid jargon and ensure your proposal tells a compelling story about your cause, the people you serve, and the difference the funding will make.

Meet deadlines and requirements

Adhering to deadlines and submission guidelines is crucial. Missing these can disqualify even the strongest applications. Use any checklist given to ensure you provide all required documents and information.

Provide evidence of credibility

Funders want to know their money is in safe hands. Include details about your charity’s track record, financial stability, and governance. Highlight successful projects or partnerships to build confidence.

Seek feedback and revise

Have colleagues, project participants or external reviewers look over your application. Constructive feedback can identify weaknesses and improve your chances of success.

Talk to funders about what you need

Many charity leaders are perpetually completing funding applications and feel like they are dancing through hoops as they try and squeeze fundraising into their already busy days.
