Later this year, Cancer Awareness Prevention Action Week will be encouraging people to talk about alcohol and cancer. The aim of this is to start conversations that will help the population lead longer, healthier lives. Lots of people don’t know that drinking even small amounts of alcohol increases the risk of at least 7 types of cancer.
Awareness-raising campaigns play a key role in myth-busting and explaining that small changes in lifestyle can significantly help to prevent disease and improve health.
Last February the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) campaign highlighted data to demonstrate that even tiny amounts of activity can dramatically reduce cancer risk. Raising the profile of exercise and a healthy diet is a crucial part of disease prevention – small changes can make a big difference.
Focusing on prevention is a key area for The Health Lottery Foundation. We are preparing to open applications later in 2025 for voluntary organisations working on projects that help prevent disease. Eligible projects could include:
• Local groups running programmes that promote fitness, and physical activity.
• Nutrition and healthy eating programmes.
• Food banks and projects that ease poverty.
• Organisations conducting medical research to combat disease.
We know that countless projects across England, Scotland and Wales are filling gaps and providing vital services to help prevent disease. We look forward to hearing about your work.
For organisations interested in applying for funding you can check your project’s eligibility and join our mailing list for updates on when the grant window opens.
