The role of charities and community groups in improving health and wellbeing

We know that voluntary organisations and community groups play a vital role in underpinning the health and wellbeing of people across Britain. Charities and local groups offer support to people when they need it most.

Tackling social isolation

Loneliness is a growing concern. Community groups host events, clubs, and volunteering opportunities to enable connections and reduce isolation. Linking people together is a crucial part of promoting wellbeing.

Offering mental health support

Mental health charities provide critical support through helplines, workshops, and peer-to-peer networks. Community groups also create safe spaces for conversations about mental wellbeing, helping to combat stigma.

Promoting healthy lifestyles

Many community programmes encourage active lifestyles and healthy living – even if that’s not the primary focus of their work. Mental health, eating well, and exercise are often on the agenda as they have such a huge impact on other factors such as employment, education, and relationships.

Places for people in crisis

In times of need, local organisations provide essential support for individuals facing situations such as hunger, homelessness, financial hardship, or emotional distress. The huge increase in the use of foodbanks and multibanks is a good example of the voluntary sector stepping in when there is nowhere else to turn.

By addressing the diverse health and social needs of the population, charities and community groups not only improve individual lives but also strengthen communities, fostering a healthier and more resilient Britain. In light of this, we will be offering grants to organisations under six themes.
